Tinubu Government Has Settled for State Police, IGP Urges Federal Officers to Get Ready

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has reportedly told officers of the Nigeria Police Force to begin preparing for the eventual introduction of state police, indicating that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has made up its mind on implementing the long-debated security reform.

According to the IGP, officers should be ready to adapt to the expected restructuring of policing across the country, as discussions on state police continue to gather momentum.

The proposed creation of state police has remained a major national issue, with supporters arguing that it would improve security by allowing states to respond more effectively to local threats. However, critics have expressed concerns that state-controlled police could be abused for political purposes.

Although the federal government has not announced a final implementation date, the IGP's remarks suggest that preparations within the police hierarchy may already be underway.
