Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that 65 out of the 69 ambassador-designates appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have received diplomatic clearance from their respective host countries, representing what the ministry described as a 97 percent approval rate.

However, attention has shifted to the four nominees who are yet to receive approval, among them Reno Omokri, who was nominated as Nigeria's ambassador-designate to Mexico.

According to the ministry, the outstanding clearances remain part of the normal diplomatic process, expressing confidence that the remaining approvals will be granted in due course.

Despite the official explanation, Reno Omokri's pending clearance has generated significant discussion on social media and among political observers.

Unlike many of the other nominees, Omokri is a widely known political commentator and former presidential aide whose public profile has often attracted controversy. Over the years, he has made several outspoken comments on Nigerian politics, including repeated references to allegations concerning President Tinubu's past, particularly issues relating to historical drug-related cases in the United States. Those remarks have made him a polarising figure in political discourse.

While some commentators have speculated that his outspoken record could be linked to the delay in diplomatic approval, there is currently no official evidence from either the Nigerian government or the Mexican authorities to support that claim. Diplomatic clearance is a confidential process involving background reviews and consultations between governments, and the reasons for delays are rarely made public.

For now, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains that the remaining four ambassador-designates, including Reno Omokri, are simply awaiting the completion of standard diplomatic procedures.

Until an official explanation is provided, any suggestion that Omokri's previous political statements or criticism of President Tinubu are responsible for the delay remains speculative.
