For many Nigerians, buying mobile data has become one of the biggest monthly expenses. But beyond the rising cost of internet access, a growing number of subscribers are asking a different question:
Why does data seem to finish much faster than before?
Fresh complaints have resurfaced after a subscriber claimed that a 74.5GB MTN monthly data bundle, purchased for ₦20,000, was exhausted in just five days despite spending most of the period connected to Wi-Fi at home and in the office.
According to the subscriber, this was not an isolated experience.
> "I spend most of my time on Wi-Fi, yet my mobile data disappears within days. It keeps happening, and I can't explain where all the data is going."
The complaint reflects a concern shared by many Nigerians, who say they are spending significantly more on mobile data than in previous years without a corresponding increase in usage.
Screenshots accompanying the complaint show a data balance of 74.54GB before later messages indicated the bundle had been exhausted.
A National Concern
The issue has become widespread enough that MTN Nigeria recently opened its data billing systems to public scrutiny through an initiative called "Data on Trial," saying it wanted customers, independent experts, and consumer advocates to examine how data is measured and billed in response to persistent complaints.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has also acknowledged receiving complaints about rapid data depletion. In response, telecom operators have introduced daily data usage reports and are working on additional transparency tools to help subscribers better understand how their data is consumed.
What Could Be Happening?
Telecom operators say fast data consumption can result from several factors, including:
Automatic app updates
Cloud backups
High-definition video streaming
Background app activity
5G and faster internet speeds
Phones automatically switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data when Wi-Fi signals weaken
However, many subscribers insist these explanations do not fully account for their experiences, especially those who spend most of their time connected to Wi-Fi or whose internet habits have remained unchanged.
Growing Demand for Transparency
As internet access becomes essential for work, education, banking, and communication, consumers are calling for greater transparency in how mobile data is calculated and deducted.
With the cost of living continuing to rise, many Nigerians say they simply want one thing: confidence that every gigabyte they pay for is accurately accounted for.
The growing debate highlights a broader issue of consumer trust and accountability in Nigeria's telecommunications sector. As complaints continue to mount, subscribers are hoping that improved transparency, stronger regulatory oversight, and clearer usage reporting will provide answers to the question many are asking:
Is mobile data truly finishing faster, or do consumers simply deserve a clearer explanation of how it is being used?
