As voters across Osun State head to polling units today, Saturday, August 15, 2026, the Nigeria Police Force has expanded its security operation into the skies, deploying its Air Wing for aerial surveillance as the state votes to elect its next governor.

The aerial deployment forms part of a wider security arrangement designed to monitor developments across the state, provide intelligence to ground operatives and respond quickly to situations that could threaten the peaceful conduct of the election.

Rather than relying entirely on personnel stationed at polling units and along major roads, the police surveillance operation gives security commanders an additional view of activities taking place across wider areas of the state.

The objective is to identify suspicious movements, monitor potential flashpoints and support ground teams where necessary.

Heavy Security Presence Across Osun

The Air Wing deployment comes amid a broader security buildup for the governorship election.

Movement across the state was restricted from midnight on Friday until 6:00 p.m. today, as authorities seek to limit unnecessary movement and reduce the possibility of election-related violence or disruption.

Security agencies have also warned groups that are not formally part of the election security architecture—including Amotekun, vigilante organisations and hunters' associations—against taking part in election security operations.

The restriction means residents and visitors are expected to remain within their locations during the specified period, except where permitted under the security directives.

Protecting Voters, Officials and Election Materials

The security operation is not only about preventing violence.

Security personnel are expected to protect voters as they exercise their constitutional right, safeguard INEC personnel and election materials, and ensure that polling and collation activities are not disrupted.

Early voting activity was already being reported in parts of Osun on Saturday morning, with electoral officials and security personnel arriving at polling locations ahead of the exercise.
